Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend

Moulin Rouge

I couldn't count the amount of times I've seen Moulin Rouge if you asked. It would have to be at least 50 times in the past decade. The very first time I watched the film I was mesmerised by all the colours, the dancing, and the music. It's been my favourite ever since.

I will be using Moulin Rouge as inspiration to create two interior spaces using New Zealand supplied textiles and furniture.

LIVING ROOM

Couch fabric:

NAME/CODE: Flamingo – 12250-103
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: Catherine Martin Mokum
COLOUR: Red Coral 184
COMPOSITION: 100% Solution Dyed
PATTERN REPEAT: 68cm (Horizontal Weft), 135cm (Vertical Warp)
WIDTH: 138cm
USAGE: Heavy Duty Upholstery, Accessory
ABRASION: 30,000 Wyzenbeek Double Rubs

Moulin Rouge is known for its red colour (Rouge meaning red).
Because of this I have chosen a really cool patterned red textile
for the couch. The colour within the pattern really draws attention to
the feathers which is similar to the frilly things the Moulin Rouge
dancers wear with their costumes. Feather boas are seen in Satine's
bedroom along with the plush looking red colours.

Cushion 1 fabric:

NAME/CODE: Galore FR-One – 12341-103
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: FR-One
COLOUR: Plaza
COMPOSITION: 100% Inherently Fire Retardant Polyester
WIDTH: 150cm
USAGE: Drapery, Accessory
ABRASION: 12,000 Martindale Cycles

This textile was chosen because of it's contrast against the red of the
couch fabric. The busyness of the textile really relates back to
the full on and busy energy of the movie, especially during the dance numbers.

Cushion 2 fabric:

NAME/CODE: Arpin Cushion
SUPPLIER: Freedom Furniture
BRAND: Freedom Furniture
COLOUR: Nude/Peach
COMPOSITION: Cotton, Acrylic, Mixed Fibre
WIDTH: 50cm
USAGE: Cushion
ABRASION: Unknown

This fabric is reminiscent of the frilly feathers and skirts of the
Moulin Rouge dancers in the film. The light nude pinkish colour goes
nicely with the dark grey of the cushion and reds on the couch.

Lamp fabric:

NAME/CODE: Maxwell Z363 – 53020-101
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: Zinc Textile
COLOUR: Orient.01
COMPOSITION: 26% Cotton, 36% Viscose, 18% Linen
WIDTH: 140cm
USAGE: Heavy Duty Upholstery, Drapery, Accessory
ABRASION: 40,000 Martindale Cycles

This gold fabric really adds a pop of colour to the space.
It goes nicely with the reds and black/greys and as it's a bright
colour amidst a lot of mostly dark textiles, it adds a bit of
lightness that might not be there during night time.
I chose a lampshade (shown below) which I think really reflects
the Moulin Rouge and the time the film is set in really well. The
colour also kind of shows the decadence shown in sets throughout.

Drapes fabric:

NAME/CODE: Bespoke – 12395-103
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: Catherine Martin Mokum
COLOUR: Crimson
COMPOSITION: 54% Viscose, 34% Cotton, 12% Polyester
WIDTH: 140cm
USAGE: Heavy Duty Upholstery, Drapery, Accessory
ABRASION: 85,000 Martindale Cycles

I really love this fabric as a drapery choice because it's a very thick
and luxurious textile. The velvet texture reminds me of burlesque clubs
and the dark red also reminds me of that kind of scene. It's a very classic
textured fabric but the almost worn in look makes it seem old - while
still being timeless.

Rug fabric:

NAME/CODE: Jasmine
SUPPLIER: Source Mondial
BRAND: Source Mondial
COLOUR: Black/Charcoal, Grey/Silver, Turquoise/Teal
COMPOSITION: 100% Cotton
WIDTH: 2m x 3m
USAGE: Rug
ABRASION: Unknown

I wanted to stick with the dark theme within the spaces
because the Moulin Rouge is a place where people go to
have fun but also to live out some of their fantasies, especially
some of the more darker fantasies.
I chose to go with this vintage faded rug because it looks very
authentic and like it's had some good use. The light pattern on
top of the dark background helps it stand out while making it a very
interesting piece of art in the living room.

Wallpaper:

NAME/CODE: Corvara ZW124 – 56110-103
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: Zinc Textile
COLOUR: Linen/03
COMPOSITION: Non Woven
PATTERN REPEAT: 53.5cm (Vertical Warp)
WIDTH: 52cm
USAGE: Wallpaper
ABRASION: Unknown

I think this really reflects one of The Moulin Rouge's
best songs in the film - "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend".
The shimmer within the pattern and the pattern itself look very
reminiscent of diamonds.
The colour of the wallpaper itself is really light and bright which
gives the room a bit of air and openness with the more darker
furniture options in the space.

Flooring:

NAME/CODE: Ultra: Vintage Oak
SUPPLIER: Forte Flooring
BRAND: Ultra
COLOUR: Vintage Oak
COMPOSITION: Engineered Wood Flooring
WIDTH: 189mm W x 21mm H x 2.2m L
USAGE: Flooring
ABRASION: 6mm European Oak Wear Layer

This was my flooring choice because, again, it's a lovely dark
colour which matches with the dark fabrics, but also because to
me it looks similar to a dance floor, which is obviously a necessity
at The Moulin Rouge. The natural wood grain makes the flooring
look finely aged which adds a bit of character to the space.

Trim paint:

NAME/CODE: Resene Black White
SUPPLIER: Resene
BRAND: Resene
COLOUR: Black White
COMPOSITION: Acrylic Enamel
WIDTH: Unknown
USAGE: Wall paint
ABRASION: N/A

Resene Black White is a good trim colour because it's a bit of
a standard white. The colour is classic and will almost certainly
go with any colour you pick. I think the white will look really nice
next to the flooring as it will contrast against the dark oak beautifully.
Against the wallpaper there isn't as much contrast colour wise,
but I believe it will dim the pattern some, which will make sure
it isn't overwhelming.

KITCHEN

Benchtop:

NAME/CODE: Vanilla Noir – Classico, Supernatural
SUPPLIER: Caesar Stone
BRAND: Caesar Stone
COLOUR: Vanilla Noir
COMPOSITION: 93% natural quartz aggregates with pigments and polymer resins
USAGE: Kitchen Benchtop
ABRASION: Unknown

I wanted to keep with the dark and kind of mysterious theme
so I have chosen a black benchtop which definitely does that.
What this benchtop also has is those slivers of white/gold looking dust
through it. I think this brings back that element of sparkling diamond
which I brought in with the wallpaper. It adds that a hint of luxury
to the space as well.

Cabinetry:

NAME/CODE: Jarrah Legno - Low Pressure Melamine Panel
SUPPLIER: Melteca
BRAND: Melteca
COLOUR: Jarrah Legno
COMPOSITION: Melamine, Resin, Substrate
WIDTH: 12mm
USAGE: Construction of furniture/cabinets
ABRASION: Abrasion Resistant

This is a cabinetry front which works nicely with the
colour of the benchtop. It's not too light which would stick
out like a sore thumb, and it's not too dark which would overwhelm
the space. I think this is a nice medium between the two.
I also chose to go with a 12mm thick panel because I believe in 1899
the cabinetry technology (I'm guessing) wasn't as good as it is today,
so I chose a thinner panel to reflect that.

Blinds fabric:

NAME/CODE: Ammirato 14513 – 57290-312
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: Chritian Fischbacher
COLOUR: 312
COMPOSITION: 100% Inherently Fire Retardant Polyester
WIDTH: 140cm
USAGE: Heavy Duty Upholstery, Drapery, Accessory
ABRASION: Unknown

Here I wanted to go with something out of the norm. A red roman blind
isn't something you will see every day which I think will add interest
to the space. It is also a velvet that is flame retardant and suited
well to public spaces so it is a very hard wearing fabric.

Wall Paint:
NAME/CODE: Resene Delta
SUPPLIER: Resene
BRAND: Resene
COLOUR: Delta
COMPOSITION: Acrylic Enamel
WIDTH: Unknown
USAGE: Wall paint
ABRASION: N/A

For this space I didn't want to bring the wallpaper in
mostly because it didn't totally make sense to me.
Instead I chose to use a red toned grey paint to contrast
with the dark kitchen benchtop and cabinetry. It brings in another
colour that isn't red or black but stays with the main colour palatte
of the space at the same time.
