The Beach Aesthetic

Ever since I was a little girl I can remember spending a week every year at Waihi Beach. From playful child, to awkward adolescent and moody teen, and finally to kind of adult - the beach has been a constant throughout my young life.

Using New Zealand textiles I have designed a space which represents the beach where I spent so much time growing up. These textiles used together should create a cohesive space that clearly showcases a relaxed and beautiful space.

Couch fabric:

NAME/CODE: Bilbao V3147 - 53207-127
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: Villa Nova
COLOUR: Breeze/27
COMPOSITION: 100% cotton
WIDTH: 138cm
USAGE: Drapery, Heavy Duty Upholstery
ABRASION: 50,000 Martindale Cycles

I chose a very light colour textile for the couch as it is
reminiscent of the beach and the feeling of calm when
you're looking out over the ocean in the late afternoon.
It's a muted colour that you would normally associate
with the colour of the houses that are right by the ocean.

Cushion 1 fabric:

NAME/CODE: Fresh - 70202-105
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: UV Pro Outdoor Fabrics
COLOUR: Pewter
COMPOSITION: 100% Solution Dyed Acrylic
WIDTH: 140cm
USAGE: Heavy Duty Upholstery, Accessory, Drapery
ABRASION: 30,000 Martindale Cycles

I chose this colour textile because I think it contrasts
really nicely against the lightness of the couch fabric.
It stands out but keeps with the feeling of the beach in
that the ocean can often be so dark it looks like it could
swallow you whole. It draws your eye to it, with the
combination of the other, lighter fabrics you can have those
"resting" places when you look around the room.

Cushion fabric 2:
NAME/CODE: Rica – 12414-102
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: James Dunlop
COLOUR: Cobalt
COMPOSITION: 65% Polyester, 25% Viscose, 10% Linen
PATTERN REPEAT: 35cm (Horizontal), 29cm (Width)
WIDTH: 140cm
USAGE: Medium Duty Upholstery, Accessory
ABRASION: 25,000 Martindale Cycles

I chose this textile because of the watercolour like
texture within the pattern. It reminded me of water
and the way it flows, similarly this pattern moves and
flows within those lines.
I think this would look really nice next to the dark
cushion and the light couch as the fabric has bits of both
light and dark within it.

Cushion fabric 3:

NAME/CODE: Technica - 57116-104 (Fake leather look)
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: James Dunlop Indent
COLOUR: Gold/04
COMPOSITION: 64% Polyvinylchloride (Vinyl), 33% Polyester, 3% Polyurethane
WIDTH: 143cm
USAGE: Heavy Duty Upholstery, Accessory
ABRASION: 100,000 Martindale Cycles

I decided to choose 3 cushion fabrics because I think
cushions look really nice in 3's. The colour combination
of the dark grey, patterned blue, and the faux leather
gold looks amazing together. The 2 solid colours with
the patterned textile play off each other really well.
The faux leather add an element of texture to the room
and the couch. The gold colour is also reminiscent of the
Waihi Gold Mine I see almost every time we visit Waihi Beach.

Chair 1 fabric:

NAME/CODE: Fenton - 57235-103
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: James Dunlop Indent
COLOUR: Graphite
COMPOSITION: 46% Polyester, 31% Cotton, 23% Viscose
PATTERN REPEAT: 34.2cm (Horizontal), 60cm (Width)
USAGE: Light Duty Upholstery, Accessory, Drapery
ABRASION: 14,000 Martindale Cycles

I went with this fabric for a couple of reasons.
The dark colour played well against the light colour
of the couch. The pattern also made it stand out a lot
over some of the other fabrics - making it a bit of a
feature of the area. Having it as a chair instead of the
couch was so that it wasn't overwhelming when you entered
the space.
The feathers can also be seen as representing the seagulls
that are very common in and around the beach town.
If wanted or needed, a light coloured cushion could be used
for this chair - perhaps with more texture than pattern.

Chair 2 fabric:

NAME/CODE: Fusion – 56034-105
SUPPLIER: James Dunlop
BRAND: Ultrafabrics
COLOUR: Clove-3849
COMPOSITION: 100% Polyurethane
WIDTH: 137cm
USAGE: Heavy Duty Upholstery, Accessory
ABRASION: 100,000 Martindale Cycles

This faux leather chair brings in another texture to
the space. Unlike the gold leather of the cushion, this
textile is a more matte leather look. It looks like a place where you
could sink into and read a nice book at the end of the day.
The brown fabric plays nicely with the others colours and creates
a natural colour story within the space.
I chose the fabric because it also reminds me of the
driftwood you often see as you walk along the beach.

Drapes fabric:

NAME/CODE: Beach Penny Collection – Cloud Blue
SUPPLIER: Hemptech
COLOUR: Lichen
COMPOSITION: 100% Linen
PATTERN REPEAT: 147cm (Horizontal), 42.5cm (Vertical)
USAGE: Drapery
ABRASION: Unknown

The texture and sheerness of the linen is something I
believe is very telling of a beachy/relaxed space. The softness
of the colours and the delicateness of the pattern all add
to that feeling. The blue in the pattern also relates back to
the blue in the cushion, making it feel more cohesive.

Rug fabric:

NAME/CODE: Hand Knotted Nain Design – IN-106
SUPPLIER: Rug Direct
COLOUR: Graphite
COMPOSITION: Cotton (Foundation), Wool & Silk (Pile)
SIZE: 304x195cm
USAGE: Rug
ABRASION: Unknown

I think this rug goes well with the space. Because there
isn't too much pattern in the furniture and cushions it
won't be overwhelming when you walk into the space.
The blue/greys in the design relate back to the blues and
greys in the cushions and drapes. The dark red-y colour in
the centre draws your attention but isn't too heavy within
the space. The Persian rug feels very vintage and makes it so
the space doesn't feel overly modern and stark.
I chose to layer the rug over carpet because it adds another
layer or texture to the space than if it were just over a wooden
or concrete floor. Warmness is what I really wanted to convey
in a space inspired by the beach.

Wallpaper:

NAME/CODE: Riviera Maison - 18292
SUPPLIER: Guthrie Bowron
BRAND: BN International
COLOUR: Wood Print
SIZE: 52cm x 10.05m
PATTERN REPEAT: 64cm straight
USAGE: Wallpaper
ABRASION: Unknown

I chose this wallpaper because it looks rustic and charming
while still keeping the cleanness that comes from wallpaper.
The whitewash is more modern but the knots and grain from
the faux wood makes it feel natural. The lightness means that
any darkness from the textiles doesn't make the room feel too
heavy and it keeps that balance. Light walls or natural timber
are seen a lot when you search for "beach house" and I think this
is a nice medium.

Carpet fabric:

NAME/CODE: Katachi
SUPPLIER: Cavalier Bremworth
BRAND: Bremworth Collection
COLOUR: Meranju
COMPOSITION: 100% Pure New Zealand Wool
WIDTH: 3.66m Broadloom
USAGE: Carpet
ABRASION: Unknown

I really liked the low pile of this carpet because it
isn't too overwhelming in the space. It's low key but
the light colour really makes it stand out. The grey ties
in well with the colours of the textiles well and doesn't
distract from the patterns in the furniture pieces.
As the carpet is made from wool it is quite soft and
contrasts well against the almost hard look from the faux
wood wallpaper.
With the very detailed pattern/imagery on the rug it is nice
having a light carpet to soften that a little.
